UNIVERSITY 10.16

REPORT BY ASST COACH TROY CARLON

University A grade took on North Fremantle at Gill Fraser Oval on a warm Saturday afternoon. The game represented a huge challenge to the boys without inspirational coach Luke Dwyer, who was instead taking full advantage of a glorious May afternoon with a romantic picnic & poetry reading with the Mrs. The word is Luke did William Blake proud with a mesmorizing reading over a delightful cheese platter & a cheeky glass of Rosé.

As in recent weeks we got off to a sluggish start with North Freo jumping out of the blocks to kick the first 3 goals. This continued into the second quarter & at the 15 minute mark we were struggling, down 4 goals to 1. Big Horse “Barry” Breen pushed forward late in the quarter & gave us the spark we desperately needed, taking 2 strong contested marks & clinically converting to take us into the main break within a kick.

To their credit, the boys lifted after half time and dominated the remainder of the game. The midfield led the way, controlling the stoppages & using their superior run & work rate to support their teammates. The back 6 were outstanding all day allowing only 4 goals after quarter time & just 13 scoring shots for the day. 100 game veteran Wiesey a standout with his characteristic attack on the contest & ability to break the lines off half back. In the end we ran out winners 10.16 to 7.6 & had it not been for some questionable shots on goal the margin could have been much bigger.

Finally a big congrats to Wiesey & Jesus on playing their 100th games for the club, a fantastic achievement. The boys were rapt to celebrate the occasion with a win.

UNIVERSITY 6.4

With Coach Gleeson out of action this weekend, the controls were handed back to thirty something year old Greg Erskine to steer the boys towards their first win of the regular season. The boys started strongly and impressed with some real endeavor and skill in the first two quarters. We were still within reach at half time, only trailing by four points.

In the second half Uni started to run out of legs and weren’t able to rebound from defence with the same consistency as we showed in the first half. Fortunately, the endeavor never died but North Freo were able to find space and finish well in the latter stages. In the end, an honorable defeat against a regular finals side. However, we are going to need to dig a little deeper to topple a top team from here.

UNIVERSITY 8.3

The University A colts came up against a very strong, undefeated North Fremantle side. The boys new that they were going to be in for a tough game from the start. In the first Qtr kicking into the breeze the colts played safe, going down the line and with a very strong back 6 we went into Qtr time even. In the second Qtr we started to take control of the game around the stoppages and tried to get the ball into our forward 50m quickly, and it worked, kicking 3 goals to 1 and coming into half time with a 2 goal lead and some good momentum. However, we came out in the third qtr without the intensity and the pressure we applied in the first half and allowed North Fremantle back in the game. North kicked 5 goals to none in the third Qtr. Going into the last Qtr coach Wallace stressed the need to lift the intensity, pressure and the urgency and the A colts responded. Kicking 4 goals to 1 in the last qtr.

With less than 2 minutes to go scores were level when Angus Sargent drew a free kick, and he went back and slotted a very important point to put us up by that margin. Thanks to a fantastic smother by Tyson Jackson with one minute to go the ball got locked in our forward line and we held on to win by the smallest of margins. It was a fantastic last quarter come back by the colts, it showed real character. However, we should not have been in that position anyway and we need to learn to play 4 quarters of strong football and not a drop our intensity. I went a bit nuts with the votes, but the boys played some excellent football, just needed 4 quarters of it.
Votes: 5 Pat Wilson (kicked 5 goals), 4 Nick Kyriakacis and Angus Sargent, 3 Oakely Dew and Seve, 2 votes Scott Anderson and Jackson Peos, 1 vote Curly Carson.

COLLEGIANS 1.5

After touching up North Freo by 6 goals the week prior, it appeared the Collegians team were travelling OK and were to be treated as a genuine contender so the dingoes trained hard through the week and came out prepared on Saturday. In the first few minutes the Dingoes were clearly harder at the ball, quicker and more organised around the stoppages and put the first goal through within a minute or so of the first bounce. Franko, Fables and Bocca put on a free clinic in the centre, as did Howie and virgin Dingo Timmy K. Macca and Junior enjoyed their day out sharing sausage rolls in the park, while first time dingo small forward ronnie collected enough crumbs to walk away with a whole cookie. Big Erbe also played very well in his first game presenting at CHF, until he destroyed his ankle (get well Erbe, hope you’re enjoying the Police Academy series from the couch). Our solid line up of Defenders kept collegians quiet – almost silent, until ADD (note the name and shame) let one go through the big sticks, he won’t be doing that again will you ADD?

At three quarter time we were at 15 goals, so we set the target to put the foot down harder and get to 20 goals, to their credit the boys got the count to 22 goals, forcing the scoreboard operator to head for the medic with a shoulder injury. We were 6.6 at quarter time, and went on to kick 16.6 for the rest of the game so it appears the boys responded well to goal kicking practice through the week. BOG and deserves a big wrap was Jingles who ran as hard as anyone all day as our ruckman, but was also collecting footies at ground level at full pace in the centre and contributed directly to the scoreboard on a few occasions. Great footy to watch, great to send the neighbours packing albeit with so little to pack, great to receive a few blocks via sponsors after the game.

Thanks Stralo, UFC Legend $8, and lesser known to us ufc great man Fitchies dad for helping us get sauced after the game.

Best: Jingles, Jr&Maccanui, Franko Fables Bocca and Fanny also put out.

COLLEGIANS 9.9

Looking to become the first Uni C-colts side to beat Collegians in years, the boys had a good week at training and looked set to continue the good form from the last two weeks. However some of the boys didn’t seem to be switched on early, perhaps distracted by the Collegians umpire who forgot his shoes and umpired barefoot. We lacked intensity and were shown up by a more desperate Collegians side, going into half time down by 20 points.

The effort was much better in the third quarter as we clawed our way back and with 5 minutes left in the game we were only down by one point. Unfortunately we couldn’t find a winning goal and Collegians kicked two late goals to mean a 13 point loss for Uni. Very disappointing day as we played nowhere near our best footy but we will get a few players back this week as we take on one of the top sides in Fremantle CBC.

Best: Nova, Fitzy, JJ, Colonel, Mallal

Chris Wiese and Paul Jesus Galloway will both line up for the A Grade in their 100th games for the UFC this weekend.

Both players were integral parts of the 2011 A Grade flag and have been pivotal players in the A Grade for the last seven or so years.

After arriving in 2003 and winning the A Grade Fairest and Best as a 20 year old, Wiesey has gone to to Captain the club and also served as the Club’s Treasurer in ‘10 and ‘11.

Jesus has been one of the troopers of A Grade in recent years. Like Wiesey, Jesus is known for high-flying acrobatics. What is not so well known is the Chosen One makes the way up from Pinjarra where he lives and works for games and training. Amen!

HAMERSLEY-CARINE 8.8

University A grade took on Hamersley Carine at McGillvray on Saturday. After making 3 forced changes from the side that defeated Swan Athletic the team was looking to get off to a fast start and put the opposition under scoreboard pressure early. The midfield group were winning plenty of possessions but our inside 50 entries were letting us down giving Hamersley Carine opportunity to counter attack of half back.

Our back 6 led by O’Hara, Wiese, Mumford, O’Rourke and Stanton were holding firm and we went in at half time 2 goals up. The 3rd quarter was a very even tussle with both sides capitalising on the scoreboard from hard work further up the field. The final quarter was very pleasing as our relentless pressure on the opposition resulted in us running out 34 point winners. Upon reflection we are still not playing at our best and we are looking to improve again against a formidable opponent in North Fremantle next week away.

Best Players: Harding, O’Hara, Greaney, Lake, Wiese, Breen, Donovan

A Reserves

UNIVERSITY 4.13 def by

HAMERSLEY-CARINE 10.10

The A-Reserves went down in a game where an inability to capitalise on opportunities inside our forward 50 cost us. What came to be the difference was an ordinary 3rd Quarter where 4 goals should have been kicked from opportunities within 20 metres from goal suggests we should start looking from some sharp shooters from the Auskick Under 8’s half time entertainment at Subiaco oval .

Gags aside the endeavour and intent where again present with the boys winning the majority of the contested footy, with turnovers and composure with our ball movement undoing all the good work. Numbers are good at training Get down both nights boys.

Best: Silky, Jess Carlon, Delroy and B Mumford.

Phil’s Got Colts

UNIVERSITY 17.9 def

HAMERSLEY-CARINE 6.3

The A colts came up against Hamersley Carine who had not won a game yet this year, but the boys weren’t prepared to take them lightly. We came out very switched on in the first quarter and kicked 3 unanswered goals, but then we switched off and allowed Hamersley back in the game, the story was similar in the second qtr. After emphasising moving the ball quickly into our forward line at half time, the lads responded and played some very dangerous football in the 3rd quarter and we piled on 6 goals to 1 in the 3rd qtr. The last qtr was a similar story with University running out 72 point winners. It was very pleasing to see the lads starting to gel as team in the second half and I think if we keep coming down to training, get used to playing with each other and continue to enjoy playing football we will continue to improve throughout this year.

Thirds

NORTH BEACH 15.4

The BDO Thirds took on North Beach in a clash which shaped as a good test to where we were at in 2012, and the answer to that question was provided. The boys we second to the footy and generally outplayed for the best part of the match; however, we showed during the third quarter that we were more than capable of matching a quality side such as North Beach.

The last quarter was extremely disappointing as the work rate and effort dropped off and we allowed North beach to score six goals, four in the final eight minutes. I am firmly of the view we have the players to be a finals side but we need to turn up and play four quarters of hard, committed to football to be that side.

Goals – Tommy K 2, James Levien, Quigs, Arnie, Shaggy, Wheels and Tim Davies

Best – Danny Delcanho, Jim Ayers, Nathan Levien, Hawks, Witty

NORTH BEACH 6.5

On what was a pretty good day for a game of footy, we were a bit apprehensive as to what North Beach would bring to the McG but with plenty of rotations from the previous week we still fielded a solid team that was ready to take whatever NB threw at us, thankfully it wasn’t much. Macca and Jr kicked a few up forward early and we were off to a good start, however….enter the sherman tank with what looked like a body paint jumper moving out of the NB goal square. This guy could move, could mark, and could kick straight and could get a gig at Lancelin pulling bogged 4wds up the beach. He quickly put on four goals for the beach and even sold a dummy in the 50 to run on and kick a goal.

Now that i think about it actually can’t remember if he sidestepped, or if a dingo just dived out of the way to avoid being run over. It took the captain cat and an entourage of three or four blokes to shut him down, they stuck to him like a rash for which there was simply no ointment an he remained scoreless from the second as the dingoes ran away with the game.

Whilst it wasn’t as good quality football as previous weeks we came home with the win comfortably. As per usual the on ballers were hard all day, the backline worked together to shut down any threats and the forward line presented all day

Best: Cat & Smokes, JR & Macca and the guys in the guts.

BJ Colts

UNIVERSITY 10.10 def

NORTH BEACH 3.5

Coming off a big win and a good week on the track, the mighty C-gulls faced a danger game against rivals Nth Beach. We had a very strong team in this week, with 10 guys unable to get a game in either colts side due to the large number of colts we have this year. The first half was a real tough slog as the overnight rain made it slippery and hard to gain clean possession. Going into half time tied at three goals each, we decided to open up the forward line to isolate their back pocket in a one on one which worked perfectly as J-Dizzle kicked 4 goals from a pocket. The back line was fantastic all day and kept Beach to a single behind in the second half as Uni piled on 7 unanswered goals to run away winners. The tackling of Dan Collopy and the rest of the midfield was outstanding in the second half and we will look to take that into next week against Collegians.

Best: Collopy, Red, Eyresy, J-Dizzle, JJ

UNIVERSITY 13.7

University took on Swan Athletic on Saturday in blustery and wet conditions in the Swan Valley, after an even start Swan Athletic were able to kick straight and hold a slight lead going into quarter time. Going with the breeze in the second we were hopeful of evening the scoreboard but some excellent clearance work from the opposition they were able to kick away and go in with a handy lead at half time.

I challenged the team to lift their work rate and willingness to compete and they responded real well outscoring the opposition in the second half and running out eventual six point winners. Some fantastic efforts by the midfield group lead by Wood, Greaney, Judd, Breen and Lake.

We look forward to taking on another newcomer to A grade in Hamersley Carine this week.

Best: Wood, Donovan, Lake, Greaney, Relf.

The Uni Reserves went down on Saturday beaten in the last quarter by a side that was determined to run all day for each other. Showing glimpses in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of what the group is capable of when we are prepared to run for each other, provide some directional voice around stoppages and some other footy basics means a win for the Uni 2’s will come when we can manage to do these things for 4 quarters. Get down both nights boys.

Best: Jon Boy, Jim Moyle,,Mumford, Silky, Wes LeFroy

Special Mention: The inimitable G Erskine with his Rah Tah, Tah’s on the bus from Swan Athletics.

UNIVERSITY 12.11

The A colts faced a tough challenge on the weekend, not only in our opposition but also due to the fact that 13 players from last weeks team had an exam on Saturday morning (thanks UWA). So in the first half we played with 18 men, then 7 guys came up from the exam to reinforce the team, thanks Jon Wyllie for being chauffeur. The 18 guys who toughed out the first half did a fantastic job, we lead going into half time by 7 points and new we would have the legs in the second half to run over the top of Swan Ath. with 7 fresh players entering the game. We blew SA out of the water in the 3rd qtr and ended up winning by 26 points. Best: Scott Anderson, Alex Davies, Tyson Jackson, Jackson Peos, Mark Bodestyne

UNIVERSITY 14.10

The BDO Thirds bounced back from the disappointment of last week with a four quarter performance to run out 58 point winners over Mount Lawley. The Thirds were much harder over the ball, won more contests and used the ball well around the ground and in front of goal in greasy conditions.
The Thirds face a big test against an undefeated North Beach next week who themselves have also beaten Mount Lawley by 10 goals. Should be a cracker of a game.

GOALS: Tom K 4, Stakes 3, Danny 2, Wheels 2, Braggy and Blue
Best: Danny Delcanho, Latte, Spoons, Tommy K and Marcus Jackson

UNIVERSITY12.6

Forecasting rain, and older bigger bodies at Mt Lawley, the Dingoes ran out a team of..well…runners who ran and ran and ran some more. They boys put their head over the ball and their body on the line against significantly bigger opposition, used clean skills and good voice around the ball at ground level with more 1%ers than a D1 Res bikie convention whilst hitting targets when they were on the run.

We played as a team and it showed as we outclassed and outran what was a pretty well experienced Mt Lawley team. Individuals did what was asked, Jr was told to kick two in the first so naturally he kicked two in the first (and two more throughout).

The forward line presented all day, and the guys in the guts were hard as nails. Stat Man introduced the Balinese monkey tackle and whilst not getting a free he came away with a fake Rolex and a few rupiah. Timmy D was towelling up the cameras down back, and ruggers was everywhere leaving their veteran forward Pies McLaughlin with no option but to reach for the Rosella by three quarter time.

B.O.G: Ruggers Honourable mention: the other 21 + runners, water & support crew

UNIVERSITY 18.17

Looking to bounce back after a poor performance last week, the boys had a big week on the track and looked sharp from the get go against a Mt Lawley side who had produced mixed results so far this season. With the scores about even at quarter time, some inspiration was provided by first gamers Jonty and Mitch Browne and the boys lifted to have a handy lead at the half. A huge third quarter by Eyresy and some magic up forward by JJ and Jake lifted us to a 9 goal lead at the last change and Mt Lawley started to go the knuckle. Credit to the boys they didn’t get sucked in and piled on 7 goals to 1 in the last to run away big winners.

Best: Jonty, Jake, Eyresy, Tom Forrest, Harry B, Mallal, Will C-R

University A grade took on Trinity Aquinas on Saturday in our first home fixture for season 2012. After a disappointing result against collegians, the side was looking to lift their intensity and effort against quality opposition in TA’s. The 1st quarter was very positive and we managed to kick away to a 2 goal lead after strong work from the midfield group led by some effective clearance work by Lake, Greaney, Judd, Breen and Relf.

Trinity Aquinas hit back hard in the 2nd quarter with both sides making the most of inside 50 opportunities. The back six were holding firm with Mumford and Wiese providing excellent rebound.

The intensity of the game continued in the 3rd quarter typified by some very strong physical encounters on both sides. Down by under a kick going into the 4th quarter we were confident of competing hard for the win but some crucial clearances by the opposition enabled them to kick away and run out 34 point winners. In what was a disappointing result I could not question the effort of the team, we just lacked composure at times and in this competition good sides will capitalise on mistakes and that was evident in the last quarter.

On a positive note, Matthew Judd played his 100 game for the club on saturday, a significant achievement for fantastic player, well done Juddy! We very much look forward to taking on Swan Athletic this week away.

The A reserves fought hard showing endeavour and intent all day but were out played by a well drilled TA’s outfit. There were encouraging signs from the week previous and it is good to see the team build on the clash against Collegians, missed tackles and some basic skill errors saw us turn the ball over. It is positive to see the group improving and we look forward to more improvement and push for the points against Swan Athletic this week.

The A colts came up against the premiers from the last two years in Phil Scott Colts in TA’s. The boys knew it was going to be a tough challenge and we started off with very good intensity. In the first half we managed to stay with TA’s and we were only down by under 2 goals at the half. In the second half TA’s blew us away, especially in the 3rd quarter, we struggled to stop their run from behind and we struggled to get it past our half forward line. In the end we now know what sort of football we need to play to be competitive this year. Votes: Cam Nalder, Alex Davies, Rhys Edwards, Seve Grantis, Dom Knight.

The BDO Thirds were soundly outplayed by a North Fremantle side which showed signs that their dominance of Third Grade was nearing its end.
Had we turned up prior to ¾ time and kicked straight, I dare say this could have been a completely different result.
I can handle losing to a side which is better than us but I honestly believe we are a better side than NF when we want the footy, are harder at the ball and convert our opportunities.
Boys, bring your mouthguards to training this week.

NORTH FREMANTLE 3.3

After losing the flag to NF last year the dingoes have been very keen to get redemption and round two is where it had to begin. The boys trained well Thursday, the tempo was up, the talk was up and this carried through to Saturday to ensure we were switched on from the very start. With the first ball up the kennel gates were open and the dogs were hungry.

The scooby snacks were hard to get early on despite excessive enthusiasm but with persistence, holes began to appear in NF’s game, and the boys did well to exploit and open up those holes which provided us the opportunities needed to get clean swift clearances out of the centre and down forward where we were able to kick 1000 points…again.

With a backline that consisted of 5 or 6 veteran premiership dingoes NF had a tough time putting them through the big sticks and as the gazelle towelled up the cameras, smoker ran the steamroller through the opposition and the cat continued to stir up the dogs leaving the magpies barely able to swoop a ten year old blonde kid at the park.

NORTH FREMANTLE 22.9.141

The C colts had a tough match this week, coming up against a strong Nth Freo side and having 10 changes to our side from round 1. We were simply outplayed by a team who wanted it more than we did and were on the back foot from the start. Despite the loss we had players who tried all day and put in solid performance, but this effort needs to be across the board for all 18 players for us to be competitive against strong sides. Big week on the track this week.

Best: Eyresy, Torey, Aristos, Lewie, Fitzy

Well done to Matt Judd on reaching 100 games for the Uni Footy Club.

Juddy will pass the milestone when he runs out for the A Grade against Trinity Aquinas at McGillivray tomorrow.

Often confused for a relation to Chris Judd with his innate ability in close and general footy smarts, Juddy has been one of the stalwarts of the Club’s A Grade and Committee in recent years.

He also completed screwed his knee completely and needed a hyrid LARS-regular recon recon (sounds like something out of Transformers), coming back successfully to be part of Uni’s A Grade Premiership team in 2011.

You can read housemate Sammy Wallace’s interview with Juddy (aka. Bulldog) in the 100 Game Interviews part of the website.

UNIVERSITY 9.18 (72)

In what was always going to be a tough contest the first quarter was very even with both sides having equal possession and similar inside 50 scoring opportunities. The second continued to be a tight tussle with both midfields winning their share of the clearances and Darren Harper and Tom Harding hitting the scoreboard with set shots on goal.

The third quarter was very pleasing in that we were able to get numbers behind the ball and stop Collegians from scoring easily with a slight breeze. We took a slender lead into the last change and managed to get two goals ahead with 10 minutes to go but a very spirited fight back by collegians saw them hit the lead by 1 goal in the final minutes, we had an opportunity to level the scores but the opposition were able to maintain their pressure running out eventual winners by 3 points. In what was a disappointing start to the season we look forward to preparing for a very tough game at home this week against Trinity Aquinas.

Best: Wiese, Wood, Harding, Kirkland, Hall, Harper

UNIVERSITY 4.7

The 2’s unfortunately went down in the 1st game of the season despite showing a large amount of endeavour and courage around the football. Sporting five players from last year’s premiership winning team the boys fought hard all day being one kick behind at half time and the final result blew out in the last quarter.

The group will improve in the coming weeks as the group has not played a lot of football together at this point, some great signs came out of the game on Saturday and we will look to improve on that result and come away with the points at home against TA’s on Saturday.

UNIVERSITY 12.5

The A colts came up against an always very strong Collegians Colts side that looked to be well drilled as they were setting up a full ground press. Collegians got the upper hand early and they maintained a two to three goal advantage throughout the game. At three quarter time Uni was down by 20 points and to the boys’ credit they did not give up and managed to kick two early goals and keep the pressure on Collegians throughout the quarter, in the final minutes of the game Curly Carson bombed a goal in from 50m to put Uni in front and the boys managed to hang on, a fantastic win.

UNIVERSITY 16.16

The BDO Thirds kicked off their 2012 campaign with a 99-point win over newly promoted Hamersley Carine at the Carine Wide Open Space. After Hamersley kicked the first goal of the game, Uni rallied and dominated play but inaccuracy in front of goal kept the home team in the game. The second quarter was all Uni until a lapse in red time saw Hamersley get their first inside-50 for the quarter and what turned out to be their last score of the match.

The second half was played mainly in Uni’s forwards line as the likes of Braggy, Hey Arnold, Crabbers and Patty Smith got amongst the goals. Ben Twinner Gollow was clearly best on ground, his ability to shrug tackles and bring others into the game was a true highlight.

The Thirds face North Freo next week which will be much more challenging and provide a stronger guide as to where we are at.

Dingoes

HAMERSLEY-CARINE 3.3 def by

UNIVERSITY 11.22

A handful of new Dingoes took little time to get going to play as a team and play the style of footy that has brought us success over previous years. The usual suspects working hard in the guts and got the ball down to our forwards where Macca et al put a few through the big sticks; however, having 30 odd blokes in the forward 50 resembling a pack of seagulls on an unmanned serve of fish and chips saw us pile on the points instead of the goals.

After half time we turned it on and played the fast flowing footy we were after to kick 7.1 for the quarter. The backline held the defence well, with Phil “twinkle toes” Scott putting on a bit of a clinic whilst also avoiding a severe case of sunburn on the dome o’ chrome on what was a rather hot sunny day. Fables, Howie and Franko worked the guts harder than a hot curry, while traditional land owner Macca put a few through on his 2012 season debut and Roids also threw his weight around to kick a few and set up a couple more.

Sea Dogs

WESLEY-CURTIN 4.3

UNIVERSITY 13.14

The C Colts got their season off to a great start with a solid performance over an undermanned but spirited Wesley Curtin side. We had a very strong side in after a good pre-season and had 25 players selected for the match; however, Wesley Curtin only had 16 players so two of our boys, Jack and George, jumped at the chance to play a full game and switched sides for the day.

Despite their lack of players, WC came out fighting and it was a close, low scoring contest in the first half. A few positional changes and that extra run from having five on the bench eventually enabled the boys to pull away and have a big win to start the year. We had 12 guys play their first game for the UFC and it was good for them to win in their first start but learning the Uni song will be a goal for this week.
