Match Reports – Week 16
A-GRADE
University 19.15 def CBC 7.5
The Uni A-Grade were coming off three losses and well and truly had their backs against the wall. If we were to have any chance of playing finals then this was a must-win game.
Early inaccurate kicking was probably the only thing that kept CBC in the game as the Uni lads were winning their positions comfortably across the park. The second quarter mirrored the first but the forwards were capitalising on their chances by putting the ball through the big sticks. We went in to half time four goals up, a similar position to the previous week. This week we didn’t take the foot off the pedal. The second half saw some glorious footy from Uni with CBC becoming more and more undisciplined as the game went on.
Nicky Dunin worked tirelessly in the ruck all day and was the side’s best player. Senior Rourke and Beardy were great on the last line of defence and both spoiled and rebounded well. Cruddy was his normal busy self and chipped in with six majors along with Tolly who bagged four, including a couple from the Peter Toll pocket in front of the Members. Another massive game against Wesley-Curtin this weekend.
A-RESERVES
University 8.6 def CBC 7.4
The Ressies had been in a fairly lean patch over the last few weeks and really needed to win to keep alive their finals hopes. We had a very low key warm up and we carried this into the first team with CBC wanting it a bit more in the first stages to be up three goals to nil at quarter time. Even though they got the jump the boys were confident we could come back and did so in the second to head into the long break even at 5 goals apiece.
The third quarter was fairly even and the boys needed to lift and ended up going into the last quarter one goal up. The last quarter was tight and CBC lifted and were up by four points with five minutes to go. The more experienced players in the team lifted when it counted most and we managed to kick the last two goals of the game to run out winners by 8 points.
Best were Weeta, Erkdog, Connor, Peetzah and Verazzi
THIRDS
University 7.8 def North Beach 6.12
Thirds came into the game knowing that beat North Beach and we’ll likely finish top 2, lose and we’ll be third and have to win a number of elimination finals to win the premiership so there was no shortage of motivation to teach the beach. We started the game well, kicking the first 2 goals of the game but we then proceeded to chase arse for the rest of the quarter. North Beach got in front with some help of generous umpiring decisions and we were down by a goal at quarter time.
The second and third quarters were fairly even with North Beach probably having some more of the play but with our defenders doing a great job, they didn’t take their opportunities. At three quarter time we spoke again of the importance of the game and the need to take a few risks. We then went out and absolutely dominated the quarter having numerous scoring opportunities. Every player wearing the Uni jumper gave their all leading to a rush of changes as guys came off exhausted.
With a minute to go, Eato grabbed a clearance from a throw in and kicked to the square where Tommy K took a great mark on the siren. North Beach’s umpire then pushed him around to a tight angle for a mark taken in the square but Tommy didn’t panic, went back and slotted it to allow us to win with a goal after the siren. Final margin: two points. Brilliant team effort but special mention to PK who rucked all day, Walks for his efforts down back, Millman, Kano and Mozza for their run through the centre.
E-RESERVE DINGOES
University def North Beach by four goals
The Dingoes came up against a solid North Beach outfit that may well sneak into finals contention. Prior to the game the Dingoes spoke about treating the match as our first final and the boys did not disappoint with their efforts in the first quarter. We had 7 shots on goal in the first 10 minutes for a return of 1.6 – a concerning score line after a week of goal kicking on the training track! The boys did not get flustered and managed to dominate all other areas of the game despite a determined North Beach outfit. The second quarter highlight was a Slips Cordin hit on a fully prepared North Beach player. Fables Owenell believed the man was dead and repeatedly told the bench that: “Johnny has killed him, Johnny has killed him.
We went into half time all even with Uni on 3.7 and Beach on 4.1. The third quarter was outstanding by the Dingoes with Wooda providing a strong target up front and the boys playing good running football. In the end the Dingoes got up comfortably. Laef Allen Memorial Round next weekend against Mt Lawley.
PHILL SCOTT A-COLTS
Uni 9.7 def CBC 6.13
This was a big game with almost a full strength team playing against the undefeated CBC. CBC came out the better team in the first quarter with the uni boys getting in each others way and making it very hard for themselves going forward. If it was for some great defending the quarter time score could have been much worse for uni and ended up being only a goal. The second quarter saw Uni adapt to the BDO jumpers we wore and started to dominate the quarter and build a solid two goal lead into the main break.
However, as has been the case this year the start of the third quarter let us down and saw the lead get reduced very quickly and we had let CBC back in to the game. With Uni still holding a narrow five point lead into the last break it was going to be an epic. The game went goal for goal early in the quarter before uni wasted numerous easy opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. However with all the boys putting in solid games we managed to hold onto our two-goal lead and get across the line. Most pleasing was how the boys conducted themselves after winning and didn’t emulate the celebrations CBC showed after beating us at home last time
Best Players: Tim Davies, Emerson Walker, Tom Harding, Tim Keating, James Caldow
BRETT JONES (GIVE HIM A GAME, WOOSHA) C-COLTS
C Colts 6.16 def by Melville 13.7
Well after a game where we had more scoring shots then the opposition and still go down by a large margin was really disappointing for the team, and a real wakeup call running into the finals. After a terrible start to the game in which we didn’t get a shot on goal in the first quarter, then to follow that up with an average start to the second quarter, a 6 goal to nil head start for the start of the game was not what Rendog and myself had planned. To the boys credit they dominated the 2nd half having 20 shots to 8, but we shot ourselves in the foot with inaccurate kicking and the four pointed triangle will be well worked at training during the week.
We have another big game at CBC next up, so hoping to bounce back.
