Match Reports – Week 14

A-GRADE

North Beach 14.9 def University 7.14

A top of the table clash was the challenge for the UFC A-Grade side on the weekend.  Despite being a top of the table clash the weekend’s game never really soared to lofty heights. Both sides had numerous scoring opportunities, but it was the defending Premiers that made the most of their chances and steadily kicked goals.  The UFC lads work rate was good and the endeavour was there, it just seemed to be one of those days.  There was a lot of banter being thrown around on the park and the lads need to focus on winning enough games in the run home to ensure we get another crack at North Beach in the finals.  On the day Breen worked tirelessly in the ruck, Jonboy resumed duties manfully at CHB, whilst Wiesey continued his good form down back.

A-RESERVE

North Beach 6.9 def University 1.7

For a legend of the Club the boys were primed to take on one of the top teams North Beach at home and came out fired up. In a tough first quarter we managed to have more of the pill, more intensity and more shots but couldn’t convert it into a quarter time lead. In a tough second quarter the Beach managed to get a few easy ones and we went into the long break 3 goals down. The lads were down at the half time break and coach Erk Dog challenged his players to lift for The Reverend’s big day. The boys responded and tackled, chased and lifted their work rate with the younger guys leading the way. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the boys were beaten by a well drilled, bigger and stronger team eventually going down by 5 goals. It could of been a lot closer.

Andrew “Rev” played his 300th game in typical fashion never giving an inch, competing 110% and always enjoying a beer afterwards. For those that played with Rev on the day it was an honour and for those that have played with Rev in the past it was fond memories. Well done Rev – you truly are a legend of the Club, one of the reasons why we play at UFC and a bloody good bloke to boot. Congratulations on an awesome effort.

A-COLTS (PHIL SCOTT COLTS)

University 13.8 def North Beach 12.9

During the week we sent out an SOS for players to come up to play on the weekend. With several phone calls and raiding the c colts we ended up with 17 players. We were playing 5th placed north beach who will be in the finals and also had 24 players. In an unsportsmanlike act NB played 18 on the field against our 17, something rarely seen at colts’ level. The first half was very evenly matched with NB holding a two goal advantage. At half time we spoke about how good a win it would be to beat 24 players who were typical NB trash talkers. The boys rallied and had a massive 3rd quarter which cut the margin to 2 points.

The last quarter was an epic, each team going goal for goal. With 2 minutes to play we squandered some chances for a shot on goal before Jarryd Steward kicked the sealer on the run to go 5 points up. Massive win against the odds and the best home and away win that I have seen at colts level.

Best Players: Tim Keating, James Caldow, Harry Donovan, Wade Spooner, George Cunningham, Jarryd Steward, Tyler Caldwell.

A note to the club: If anyone could help out the colts on game day it would be much appreciated. We really do need some extra support staff to help out – all players and supporters of the club are most welcome!

C-COLTS (BRETT JONES COLTS)

University 10.7 def Whitford 5.5

The gulls had a great win this weekend. With only 16 players the boys were able to control the match with the midfield of trio of Ruggers, Palmer and Porno dominating the match and Biff and H-Bomb playing their best game for the club this season. With great support from Spider and Carts in the ruck, and Coombes and Dragon controlling down back, the game was over by 3/4 time, with the boys kicking 5 goals to nothing in the quarter. All in all it was a great win by the gulls with a win next week guaranteeing us finals football in 2010

Votes 5. Ruggers, 4. Palmer and Porno, 3. Spider and Carts 2. Coombes and Dragon 1. H-Bomb and Biff
