Match Reports – Week 12
A-Grade
University 17.17 def Stirling 2.10
The Uni lads put on a devastating display of football against Stirling in Rd 11 of the WAAFL. After having had a number of changes from the previous week the A Grade side dominated play early but were not really hitting the scoreboard. The meagre one goal lead at quarter time was a little flattering for the opposition. From quarter time onwards the Green Machine figured out that taking risks and hitting targets in the corridor would be well rewarded on the expansive Richard Guelfi Reserve. Three consecutive 5 goal quarters proved Uni as an attacking force, though almost as pleasing was the miserly defence that conceded a paltry two majors for the whole day. Ned BW was resolute in defence, Si and Cruddi were a real handful up forward, whilst Duds Dunin led the ruck superbly all day by providing great service to the midfielders. Three in a row for Uni A-Grade (now 2nd on the ladder). Let’s keep this momentum going.
A-Reserve
University def Stirling by 10 goals
Playing Stirling is sometimes like being a good wingman and taking home the ugly friend….its good fun at the start, then you’re into the action and all you hope that you get through the 2 hours without any injuries and get home safe. Then its usually more fun catching up with your mates for a beer afterwards! Anyway the Ressies ended up being good wingman on Saturday and after a solid first quarter the boys warmed up quite slowly and against an average opposition kicked clear and were never headed or challenged all afternoon. What should of probably been a good 15 goal win ended up being a solid 10 goal win which was important for the boys who are now pushing for finals.
Best were Dono, Harry Seward, Stevo, Erk Dog, Stretts and Denty.
Thirds (E-Grade)
University 20.24 def Swan Athletic 5.3
Uni had another solid win against a team which has only won one game this year. Uni dominated each quarter and should have won by more but for some errant kicking personified in the third quarter when we kicked five goals, nine behinds. Overall though, it was a pretty good performance and some passages of play were some of the best we’ve had for the year. Some of the better players included Harry who dominated at CHF, Mozza with eight goals, Danny, Little Dog and Kano in the middle.
Dingoes (E-Reserve)
University 16.9 def Swan Athletic 1.0
A great day for footy and an average opposition gave the Dingoes a chance to put into practice a few things we worked on at training. Despite having low numbers as commonly happens at this point of the season, the Dogs were able to put a good team on the park and play a good game of footy. The back line were solid as always, keeping Swan non-athletic scoreless until late in the last when a “Growdenesque” pair of hands appeared out of the top of a pack, the ball happened to land and get wedged between the said hands which resulted in an easy shot on goal. While Roids was tackling blokes twice his size and getting smashed for his efforts, Shirls came down with his missus to have a look and was running water before he knew it, a punter was waving two Uni jumpers on the goal line after the flags went missing, and Greg “the orange maggot” Shine ended up with the ball on his chest after a centre bounce and decided he’d try again. Dingoes remain on top of the ladder and preparing for a few hard weeks to come.
A-Colts (Phil Scott Colts)
University 18.8 def Stirling 4.5
With 19 blokes we went into the game with a very positive mentality due to the fact that almost everyone will be getting 100% game time. In the first minute our ruckmen simsy got knocked out by friendly fire so we were down to 18 players. Stirling kicked the ifrst goal straight after and it started to look like one of those days. However the boys responded in their usual mannor to take a 3 goal lead into halftime. After half time the boys continued the great work and finally started putting on the scoreboard pressure that reflected the style of game we were playing. Very good holiday win and the boys sung the song with great gusto!
Best Players: Rory and Ben Gollow, Tyler Cauldwell, Wes Lefroy, Robbie Delroy, James Caldow
C-Colts (Brett Jones Colts)
University 14.10 def Wesley-Curtin 6.10
Boys had a great win this weekend considering usually c colts struggle to even get a team during uni holidays. The win was set up by a 11 goal to 2 first half with the acting captain Pricey kicking 6 straight. But the WCs (toilets) played well in the second half outscoring the gulls 4 goals to 3. Massive game for the gulls next week against arch rivials Collegians a team we havent beaten in c colts for at least 5 years.
Votes: 5. Lecky; 4. Palmer; 3. Pricey; 2. Porno; 1. Red.
