Match Reports – Week 15

A-GRADE
NF 14.8 def University 12.4

The A grade boys had a must win game after a couple of disappointing defeats on the trot. North Fremantle are a good side and had some important players that needed to be shut down. For the first half we remained on top particularly in the second quarter and went into the break 3 goals up. Complacency perhaps set in and we came out a different side – no longer doing the hard things that got us to where we were. This 15 minute lapse saw 6 goals leak through our defense and the lads found it difficult to peg back. We did start to play good footy once again but had switched off for too long in the third quarter. Woodsy returned to form and was hitting bodies hard through the midfield, Cruddy was also released through the mids and his attack on the footy and ability to win contested footy stood out, Jonesy was tireless at centre half forward and Rocket Snr looked good running out of the back line. Grabski has been doing good work at the local disco of late and also continued his good form on the field.

The side needs to set itself for the coming month and look forward to playing four quarters of team footy each week. If we can do this then we’ll feature in September.

A-RESERVES
North Fremantle 10.5 def University 9.6

The Ressies had been hit by the dreaded Uni holidays winter solstice and had to recruit players to field a team against highly rated North Freo. The boys (some unfit and some playing their first game in years) were instructed to have some fun, have a crack and roll the dice and see what happened and after a solid first half were neck and neck with their more fancied opponents. North Freo came out firing after half time and cruised ahead by 4 goals by the 3 quarter time break. The Uni boys were having a crack all day and again lifted in the last to peg their way back when all looked lost. The Ressies got within 5 points and if it wasn’t for shoddy boundary umpire throw ins wasting time in the last few minutes – the boys may of stolen an against the odds win. A gutsy effort and who knows what will happen when the boys deliver this type of ticker for the remaining games. Well done also to Lach Stretton for playing his 100th game.

Best were: Chris Kay, Erk Dog, Verazzi, Milly, Tolly and Stretts.

E-GRADE (Thirds)
University 10.18 def Wesley Curtin 6.3

University headed into Round 15 aiming to get the season back on track after a disappointing loss to North Freo in the previous round. Uni got off to a good start with Danny slotting one in the first  minute before the contest turned into a bit of an arm wrestle. Whilst Uni dominated large parts of the first half, bad kicking kept WC in the game, exemplified by us kicking 2 goals 7 behinds in the second quarter. The second half was a much better performance with us taking more of our opportunities and keeping WC quiet. By three quarter time, we had the game in control and with a dominant last quarter we ran out 39 point winners. Better players were Danny, Millman, Wes, Crabbers and Morey. With North Beach losing on the weekend, it sets up a massive game for us next weekend when we play them. The winner should lock up second place so come down and get behind the Uni boys in what should be a big day for the club.

E-RESERVE (Dingoes)
University 6.6 def Wesley Curtin 6.4

The Dingoes rocked up on a perfect day for footy to be faced by a group of large lads, an organised and 2nd on ladder Wesley Curtin.  They had wheeled out the cavalry to knock us off the top of the ladder, and for the first 15 mins it worked.  WC kicked four goals pretty much in a row in the first, and they loved it, but then labrat got angry and their luck ran out.  The Dingoes back six absolutely shut them down.  The ball spent most its time down in WC’s forward line with the dingoes having personnel issues along half forward and full forward, but every time it went down to WC forward line, it just got spat out with a quality switch, kick, or mark by labrat (who actually took a lot more marks than their quality full forward)  The gazelle used his pace, didn’t give his man an inch.  The dingoes slowly but surely clawed their way back having level scores by half time.  WC with the wind in the third, dingoes kept them without a goal to go into the last with a breeze, put on a few snaggers and come away 2 point chicken dinners.  WC managed one goal for the rest of the game after their four goal early run. Very good result for the dingoes and leaves us one game clear on top, and a week off during finals.

PHIL SCOTT COLTS (A-Colts)
University 15.15 def North Fremantle 3.7

After three successful holiday games the boys set out to make it 4/4 from the holidays against our old rivals in NF. As usual NF set themseles for us and came out of the block well kicking 4 points whilst we managed to find the big sticks 3 times in the quarter to open up a handy lead at quater time. The second quarter saw uni really take the momentum and put more socreboard pressure on to a very loose marking north freo. The third quarter saw a repeat of the second quarter with uni running freely through the middle and continuing to score freely and go into the last quater with the game beyond NF. The last quarter was not a pretty quarter of footy with NF going the knuckle in typical fashion and not playing the ball. Big game v CBC next week with the team starting to regain its better country players.

Best Players: Harry Donovan, Harry Garland, Michael Arnold, Tim Davies, Wade Spooner, George Cunningham

BRETT JONES COLTS (C-Colts)
University 12.10 def North Beach 5.6

The Gulls had a good old fashion teaching of the beach this weekend, giving the opposition a lesson in how to play football and not to be douche bags. The game started off well with a real empathis on this game being the start of our road to the finals. Up by four goals to nil at quarter time we knew the Beach would come out hard and they kicked the first three goals of the second quarter. But to the boys’ credit that was as close as they came. Lead by Porno in the middle and Catt in a backline that only conceded two goals in three quarters and Trev and Ali playing their best games for the club. The boys really finished the game well with Bangers & Mash stopping a goal on the line after the siren.

Votes: 5.Porno; 4.Catt; 3.Trev; 2.Ali; 1.Pricey.
