Match Reports – Week 17

A-Grade Round 16

Wesley-Curtin 9.8 def by University 11.5

The Uni A-Graders had a tough task on Saturday taking on the third-ranked Wesley Curtin at their home ground.  The weather conditions suited the Uni lads fast and attacking game style and the UFC kicked away early to pile on five goals to one.  Greaney started extremely well in the middle, whilst Junior and Wiesey held strong down back.  As expected Wesley Curtin then hit back and controlled the middle part of the game.

Knowing how important a win would be for the UFC finals charge the lads dug deep and wrestled back control of the game, largely due to regaining command in the midfield and providing Jones, Breen and the lads up forward a number of chances.  Caldow and Jonesy iced set shots late in the game to get the UFC noses in front and from there the lads held strong for an exciting and well-deserved win.  The club had a great weekend. Well done.

Best: Wiese, Junior, Grabski, Jones, Dunin, Breen, Greaney.

A-Reserve Round 16

Wesley-Curtin 8.9 def by University 9.4
After an energetic and focussed warm-up coupled with the reminder of the significance of the Laef Allen Round and Fido’s 100th game, the A reserves started very strongly posting the first couple of majors of the game going onto control the first quarter. After quarter time, the game became a very hard-fought and tight contest with neither side giving anything away and the margin never more than two goals for either side.

All 22 contributed on the day which resulted in an inspring one-point win. Congratulations to Fido (100 games) and Nicho (50 games, give or take 27) who were celebrating milestones. We are still a chance to play finals (see Peetzah to view his Excel spreadsheet of our chances). Best were Shoobs, Number Plates, Fido, The Dirty Q, Erkdog and Sammy A.

E-Grade Round 17

Mt Lawley 9.5 def by University 13.15
Uni went into the game knowing a win sealed a top 2 finish and a double chance at a grand final. In addition, being the Laef Allen round it provided no shortage of motivation. The boys started well, controlling the game with inaccuracy the only area of concern. The second quarter was where the game was won with uni kicking 6 goals to Mt lawley’s 2.

The third quarter was of a similar nature, whilst Mt Lawley actually had the better of the last coming back and outscoring us in that term. Best were Eato, Crabbers, Kano, Lloyd and Tommy K. Overall it was a pleasing result and we now have two weeks off to prepare for our first final against North Freo. If we win that one we go straight to a GF.

E-Reserves Round 17

Mt Lawley 8.3 def University 7.7
It was disappointing that the Dingoes were unprepared to run or put their heads on the line in the first half of such an important game for our team. This meant that at half time we were behind and despite a valiant effort in the second half the team came up two points short. Numerous opportunities were squandered and the team is pretty disappointed in their efforts. Philthy Phil Adams ran hard all day and was one player to give us some run through the middle of the ground.

Peter Woods provided a target at CHF and John Simpson ran hard despite suffering from a serious lack of fitness after a Bali bender. The best player on the day was John Cordin whose commitment to winning the hard ball and inspiring his teammates was awesome and will be extremely valuable come finals. It is extremely important the boys remember how hard it is to win against strong opposition.

PHIL SCOTT A-Colts Round 16

Wesley-Curtin 6.9 def by University 10.10
A big game for the colts with 2nd on the ladder playing 3rd on the ladder along with the fact that Wesley Curtin beat us at home the last time we played. It was also important to carry on the momentum of beating CBC the week previous. The game was played at a high level and spirit and was even throughout the day with the difference being our ability to attack and apply score board pressure.

If it wasnt for some ‘dodgy’ free kicks and a drop in concentration in red time the score could have shown an even greater margin to Uni. Most pleasing was our passges of quality ‘Uni’ footy that we played and getting closer to putting in a four quarter effort. We are almost certainly playing WC in the first week of finals so it was a good chance to have a look at their style of play.

Best Players: Robert Delroy, James Kirland, Tyler Cauldwell, Josh Bocca, Tim Keating, Tom Harding
BRETT JONES C-Colts Round 17

Fremantle CBC 8.8 def by University 10.8
Well, what a game by the Mighty Gulls this weekend! After trailing by four goals at half time, it took a master stroke by assistant to the coach Sam Mac to suggest man-on-man football, swinging the game the way of the Gulls. After the break, the boys came out firing with Ronnie (Maddog) kicking three goals and the backline lead by Catt, Red and Dragon keeping CBC to just one shot on goal in the third quarter. Going into the last quarter just trailing by five points, the boys, spurred on by the memory of Laef Allen put in a last quarter to behold. The boys charged home to vicotry: Ronnie kicked another three goals (one of which was goal of the year), Pricey dominated at centre half-forward and Thommo got more clearances then the great Matt Franklyn.

We have TA’s (the top team) at home next week and would love to see a good crowd down to support the boys in their last game before finals.
Votes: 5.Ronnie; 4.Thommo; 3.Pricey; 2.Catt, Red, Dragon, Howie, Porno and Henry; 1.Shaggy, Shano and Ruggers.
