Match Reports – Week 18
University 19.11 def Wembley 4.7
Standing in the way of the A Grade side confirming a birth in the finals for the first time since 1999 was Wembley FC. The Green Machine played a tremendous game of football against Wembley in the sides’ first encounter this year, and the challenge was to repeat the dose.
Wembley kicked 2 of the first 3 of the game before the UFC went into over-drive and kicked the next 15 goals of the match. The defence was miserly, gaining much reward for playing accountable and switched on footy. The midfield again worked well and provided many scoring opportunities up the ground. On a day when there was a great turnout of old boys for the Skinny Maskiell Trophy it was El’ Presidente who led the way, with Toll donning the leather jacket and having a full bag full at day’s end.
Best players were Hoggy, Greaney, Dunin, Breeny and Tollmeister. Big game for us this week.
A-Reserve Round 17
University 9.1 def Wembley 7.7
What a win! These are the wins that set up seasons and define some careers. It’s a pity that we had to wait until the second last game to show some real spirit but better late than never. The boys wanted to win this game to keep their finals aspirations alive but started slowly against a fired up Wembley team (who were fighting for finals in fifth spot) to find themselves three goals down. For most of the first half the Uni boys were playing lacklustre footy but found themselves only two goals down at half time and still with a chance of an upset.
The third quarter was a time for some guys to step up and step up they did – going hard at the ball, winning contests and throwing themselves at packs and at three quarter time the game was back on level peggings. Wembley kicked away at the start of the last quarter to be two goals up but the Uni boys tried everything to hang on and eventually persistence paid off with two great goals to get us level again. With five minutes to go, a draw looked on the cards but some individual efforts and a great set shot from Marky Mark put the boys six points up and we managed to hold on for the remaining few minutes to seal a sensational win. We’re still a chance for finals.
Best were: Stevo, Verazzi, Connor, Pizza and Shoobs.

BRETT JONES C-Colts Round 18
University 10.8 def Trinity Aquinas 3.4
Another wonderful performance by the Gulls this weekend, keeping the top side in the comp to just three goals in a game. With Operation Smackdown running in full effect (man on man) the boys dominated all over the ground. With Shaggy clearly the best big man on the ground and with the help of Red down back and Thommo, Hey Arnold and Jimmy Levine in the middle the boys controlled the match from start to finish. We have Collegians next week in an Elimation final so really looking forward to that.
5. Shaggy; 4. Thommo; 3. Red; 2. Arny and JL; 1.Everybody else.
